Police sayPort St. Lucie FL band teacher Gary Burnette had sex with minor after band event

Every time I post a story about a teacher having sex with a student, the people in the community are shocked.  I’m shocked that they’re shocked.

CBS 12 reports the bombshell allegations against a Port Saint Lucie teacher continue to make waves throughout the community.
Gary Burnette, the band director at St Lucie West Centennial High, has been fired and more details of his alleged relationship with a 15 year old student are coming to light.

St. Lucie County School District says Gary Burnette went through all of the proper protocols to be hired including background checks.
Students say word got out after a friend of the alleged victim got the texts and notified police.

Burnette appeared before a judge Tuesday morning as he was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior and sexual battery on a minor.

According to an arrest affidavit, Burnette admitted to having sex with the student once in the back of his truck last month.

Police say it happened as he was driving the girl home after a school band event.
Friends of the alleged victim tell us they've seen her with Burnette many times before but never thought anything of it.

Ayleen Najera says she was shocked.
"He was funny. Everybody is like, nobody expected it. I have friends in band who were just like wow," said Najera.

Foster Pease says many kids were upset.
