CNS News reports attorneys for a paroled transgender inmate say California has agreed to let a court order stand that could have provided their client with state-paid sex reassignment surgery.The Associated Press reports the settlement announced Tuesday doesn’t assist 52–year old Michelle-Lael Norsworthy, who was released last summer after serving 30 years in prison on a second degree murder charge.According to the Transgender Law Center, the settlement has the state agreeing to cover $500,000 in attorney’s fees for Norsworthy and will let an earlier ruling by U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar of San Francisco to stay on the books as a legal precedent for other transgender inmates.SFGate reports that Norsworthy is now trying to arrange Medi-Cal coverage for the surgery.“What the state of California did to me was not right,” Norsworthy said in a statement. “I was denied medical care, experienced repeated and brutal sexual assault, and suffered the daily rejection of my basic humanity and identity for 30 years.
