Standoff follows fatal shooting of Delaware state trooper Stephen J. Ballard

One of the most dangerous jobs in the country is being a police officer.
Stephen J. Ballard paid the ultimate price and it's really so sad.
CBS News reports a man shot and killed a Delaware state trooper outside a convenience store Wednesday and later barricaded himself inside his house, where he continued to fire shots at officers, police said.

The trooper was shot several times and died at a hospital, state police Superintendent Col. Nathaniel McQueen said at a news conference.

"This is a sad day for our state and for the Delaware State Police family," McQueen said, with Gov. John Carney at his side.

Cpl. StephenJ. Ballard, 32, was shot about 12:10 p.m. after he approached a vehicle in the parking lot of a Wawa store in Bear, Delaware, reports CBS Salisbury, Maryland affiliate WBOC-TV. McQueen said the vehicle had two suspicious people inside.

  1. Being a cop is not even in the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the country. It is more dangerous to be a citizen around a cop than a cop around citizens.

  2. You are correct. And two thirds of LEO fatalities are the result of vehicle accidents and health issues
    ( read Winchell's syndrome i.e heart attack).
If you factor out these the remaining felonious deaths would put the death rate for LEO even lower.
